    • Detailed Snapshot:
The Baastir are a primitive race on the cusp of being 'elevated' and introduced to galactic society. As of right now, they are exclusively tribal and should be played as such. Racial traits lend themselves well to physical tasks and mechanical aptitude. The Baastir are curious and intelligent creatures, which is a bit ironic considering their level of society.

An astute reader might guess that their elevation is anything but benevolent. This race of two-legged felinoids is most likely being exploited for labor and entertainment. This sort of role should be the vast majority of Baastir played, meaning Baastir players should be taking on a support role and remaining true to the current state of the species.

Baastir will require an application and character page to play.

      • Biology:
Feline physiology and humanoid traits are well-adapted to a generally lush and dangerous home-world. Coincidentally, this has adapted them very well to space travel and zero-g movement.

Individual Baastir appearance can vary widely. There are minor differences in evolved physiology and fairly wide-ranging fur color and pattern possibilities. Feline traits include digitigrade legs, fur, claws, tails, pointed ears, floating clavicle (unattached collarbone), slitted pupils, corresponding night vision, and sharp teeth. Facial structure varies from Baastir to Baastir depending on genetics. Anything from catlike and hairless aside from fur, to humanesque and possessing a full head of hair is possible, and entirely up to the player's discretion.

Stripes, rosettes, spots, and swirls of color can be lain over most any natural fur color. It isn't all that surprising to find familiar patterns in this species. Members of this race may resemble tigers, cheetahs, leopards, and so on. Strong legs enable them to jump great heights or dash forward at a startling pace. They are also adept at landing safely so long as they're prepared to do so. Interestingly enough and contrary to familiar feline behaviors, they are also adept swimmers and very much enjoy a good soak. A large lung capacity lends itself well to diving and physical endurance. Each of their fingers sport a retractable claw at their tips, and a barely-notable amount of webbing between fingers and toes that assists in treading water.

      • Culture:
Generally speaking, the Baastir are practical and very in tune with their surroundings. Their culture is one similar to what humans might have if they'd never discovered electricity or gunpowder, though with the difference that they worship no gods. They feel most at home in the wilderness where their sharp senses and reflexes can be put to the test.

Given their history, Baastir do not believe in 'gods', per se. They seem to be culturally aware that they were once a race of greater beings. There are always exceptions to any given rule, and the Baastir are no exception! There are tribes that worship animistic gods, typically those of the system's star or one of Baast's three moons.

Recently, they have been introduced to galactic society and, despite primitive lifestyles, tend to take to it quite well. Sharp senses and an outstanding sense of balance helps them maneuver in zero-g environments and during space flight. Their bodies are more sturdy and their hearts are stronger, able to continue pumping blood into the brain under higher g-forces than a human could withstand. Given the acceleration their society is experiencing on the technology front, the Baastir people will likely soon develop into a culture with a mix of antiquated traditions and high technology.

      • History:
The Baastir are an animalistic race, ripe for development even from an in-character standpoint. Archeological digs on their home planet suggests that they were once a mighty civilization. Difficult to reach locations and deep caverns are riddled with crumbling structures they could not have built in their current state. Perhaps there is a sector where the remnants of that culture remains, or even members of their race that have adapted to a life among the stars.

Remnants of their technology do exist topside, usually in the form of ritualistic shrines and 'mysterious artifacts' most often bestowed upon the most worthy of warriors or tribal chiefs and shamans. In the rare cases that they work. Aside from these observable facts, much of Baastir history remains unrecorded

More than a few of their kind have been spirited away from their home to become entertainers in a frightening, futuristic, neon-clad world while the rest are lifted to a new cultural height. Being introduced at this cornerstone of their society means players will be able to create a character that they'll enjoy. A displaced primitive hunter, a surprisingly adept mechanic or crack pilot, not to mention that their species is practically begging for augmentation of already impressive characteristics. They are a competitive species, and a natural curiosity will see that most come to adore machines. Biological and mechanical augments will allow members of this species potentially play a role in military operations or private squabbles. Others may choose a more peaceful route, or be forced into one! As implied above, more than a fair share of their kind have been captured, and the role of servant is one that they can fill just as easily.

Pre-galactic history contains little of note as far as recorded history is concerned. Digging deeper could easily prove interesting, however. There are subterranean ruins on their planet that suggest the Baastir were once a highly evolved race capable of incredible technological feats. Perhaps even greater than the galactic standard today. What made them fall so far will be a difficult enigma to crack.

      • Technology:
Decidedly limited! Baastir are limited to primitive tools and hunting implements. They could prove frighteningly effective if given the modern-day equivalents in Starbound, or simply taught how a welding torch works. As a species, they are ingenuitive and take well to geometrical or mechanical problems.

The Baastir are, in short, a fallen race. Their empire used to stretch galaxies, and evidence of their greatness can be found in ruins buried deep under their current home planet. A few artifacts from this time have surfaced in their current society, but a scant few will still work by themselves, and there is absolutely no hope for current technology to reverse-engineer these artifacts. If any are found, they will have their own tech application, and will be limited in number.

      • Additional details:
I plan on taking suggestions and plot ideas, or perhaps holding a poll, to decide the Baastir homeworld's fate. Will they be elevated? Exploited? Subjugated and made to worship their conquering gods? This is entirely up to the server as a whole to decide via survey. Keep an eye out!
