Name: Paraspatial Xenoplasmids, Anomalous Genetic Vector Description: As the name implies, Paraspatial Xenoplasmids are foreign plasmids originally discovered in the DNA sequence of interloping fauna from Hyperspace. Unlike typical genetic vectors, xenoplasmids are capable of integrating a desired sequence into a patient's DNA exceptionally quickly, producing a full-bodied expression of those genes in only a few minutes. Abilities: On their own, xenoplasmids are an inert addition to the body that perform no function, quickly dying off as the body cycles cells. When combined with a desired sequence of genetic information, they are capable of quickly cycling a body's cells to rapidly alter their genes. Typically, these alterations take between one and ten minutes depending on how drastic the alteration is. Utilizing xenoplasmids, it is possible to modify individuals with anomalous genomes that otherwise would not survive insertion into the body. This isn't often done, and as such is poorly understood. Conditional Abilities: Despite the flaws, xenoplasmid modifications are often sought after because they are a non-invasive and simple treatment for genetic modification that can be done with or without extensive medical knowledge. In this way, it's often cheaper to get a sketchy xenomod than go to a proper hospital for gene therapy. Xenoplasmids are capable of modifying all species, as long as the selected gene is compatible with their biology. This includes the Thaniifarri and Nas'Beru. Limitations: Altering the body with xenoplasmids is extremely painful, while this pain can be withstood for minor alterations to the body, larger changes can easily render a person effectively unconscious for the full duration. The machines required to sequence and administer xenoplasmids are often incredibly bulky, with even the smallest and most portable modifier requiring an external power source. Individuals who have used xenoplasmids are now host to paraspatial biology, which can not be safely reconstructed by modern cloning bays. Any alterations caused by xenoplasmids are reverted if the individual is ever cloned. Conditional Limitations: In areas of one or higher cuil, modified individuals experience Paraspatial Overlap Disease, caused by the foreign elements in their DNA attempting to adjust to the cuil level to best survive. Symptoms of POD include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, hallucinations, and a feeling of weightlessness. Travelers moving through Hyperlanes alongside modified individuals are sometimes victim to Crossroads Disease- A contagious mutation of POD that manifests as a sense of longing and extreme mood swings when traveling through Hyperspace. Once contracted, Crossroads Disease can remain dormant in an individual for a period of two to three months, eventually fading after prolonged periods out of Hyperspace. While nonfatal, sufferers of Crossroads Disease have been known to walk out of airlocks amidst Hyperlanes. The use of Mana is found to produce negative effects in individuals that suffer from POD or Crossroads Disease, with Mana effectively doubling the time Crossroads Disease can remain dormant in a host. The use of xenoplasmids can have addictive qualities on some individuals. Users who repeatedly alter themselves are more likely to grow addicted. There is no known way to produce large quantities of xenoplasmids. As they rely on anomalous biology, cloning bays nor Shifters are incapable of producing them. How does it work?: Harvested from the DNA of interdimensional creatures, the exact method by which xenoplasmids perform genetic alteration isn't well understood by modern science. Purgatorian researchers posit that the answer may be found in the extreme biological changes required of a creature that can co-exist healthily across multiple cuil levels, especially in areas of unstable reality. Note: The intention for this application is to allow for easier access to genetic modification, as well as allow more interesting genemods into the setting. Exceptional genemods made possible by xenoplasmids are expected to be applied for as their own technology. Flavor Text: The first scientific paper on paraspatial plasmids came out of a Purgatorian research institute, as many anomalous findings often do. For a time, the geneweavers of Nas experimented with it in specific breeds of Nas'Beru, before it proved too unstable a factor for mass production. The most commonly sourced xenoplasmids come from Tarridus, which is capable of harvesting them from the blood of Qadim. Curiously, the Xinoddus Empire is known to have utilized xenoplasmids, despite never discovering the hyperdrive. Attainability: Semi-Closed. While commonplace in some circles, xenoplasmids are a rare commodity harvested from the DNA of select interlopers. Tag: [Industrial] Category: Genetic
