Name: ORT Chip (Organic Reinforcement Trainer)

Description: An ART chip is a tiny microchip that can be injected into the brain of any animal or person. The size of the chip depends on the size of the target animal's brain, ranging from mere micrometers for something such as a small rodent, to centimeters for an average human. The price of such a chip also depends on its size.

    Abilities:
    • The organism the chip is injected into is more receptive to learning new and more complex behaviors. For most animals, this means they can be trained to do various things and routines significantly easier, and more complex ones at that.
      • For sapient organics, the chip allows them to learn and retain information easier. Exceptionally useful for those in school, especially those with accelerated programs.
    • Because the chip only makes organisms more receptive to training and learning, destroying the chip or removing it such as with an EMP will not cause the organism to forget their training.
    Limitations:
    • Training animals using the chip still requires the skill set of an experienced trainer that knows what they're doing.
    • For sapients, the chip is known to occasionally cause migraines and inappropriate calmness.
    • Larger brains require invasive surgery to install the chip, whereas smaller animalian brains can have the chip injected.
How does it work: The ORT chip is installed into the hippocampus of the target brain, targeting neural pathways central to learning and enhancing them and causing increased levels of GABA neurotransmitters which are attributed to neurogenesis of brain tissue.

Flavor text: The ORT chip was created to support learning in people with learning disabilities, or for academics that wanted to easily sponge up more knowledge. However, the chip didn't gain much popularity outside of some circles due to the invasive surgery required to install them into the deep brain. Where the chip did shine, however, was in the circus. Ringleaders in charge of circus animals used the chip to teach their animals new and complex tricks that could never before be performed.
