    Name: Intrahepatic Delivery System (IDS)

    AKA: Drug Organ, Stimpendix

Description: IDS is a small bean-shaped implant which, at cursory inspection, looks like a miniature kidney. It connects to the respiratory, nervous, and cardiovascular systems and is capable of producing a wide range of products, depending on the running variant. It comes pared with a small metal port used to introduce payloads.

Payloads come in the form of glass tubes attached to specialized metal ports, usually with clear labels – though bootleg payloads might be less clinical.

    Abilities:

-Produce a wide variety of drug effects on demand, depending on the input payload

-Payload packages come with ‘triggers’ (IE high stress levels, depressive episodes, or volitional triggering via additional neural implant) for drug effects to activate

    Conditional Abilities (Optional):

-Some such drug effects include stimulants, relaxants, de-stressors, hallucinogens, antidepressants, generic euphorics, and many others

-Recreational effects have easily tunable potency and are generally set to volitional triggers

-Payloads can be ‘refilled’ either from official or bootleg sources (though the latter carries obvious danger)

-Due to its biological nature, IDS is not disabled by EMPs

    Limitations:

-Requires 1-2 invasive surgeries to install

-Unavailable for exotic xenotypes (such as Remnants) unless specifically developed

-Payloads last two weeks before a new payload is needed, swiftly resulting in dependence (and with it, return customers)

    Conditional Limitations (Optional):

-Non-volitional triggers can sometimes result in unwanted drug delivery

-Bootleg payloads often come with highly addictive substances and/or unwanted triggers (such as a depressant being deployed in a high dose at the end of the payload’s use)

    How does it work:

IDS is primarily a chemical processing and deployment system, combined with various biomonitors to detect ‘triggers.’ When a ‘trigger’ is active (such as high stress, or neural implant sending an activation signal via the nervous system), IDS activates the drug distribution based on the payload it is equipped with. This results in swift delivery of the intended substance – with effects ranging from an instant end to a depressive or angry episode to an intense euphoric high.

    Flavor text:

IDS was originally developed as an experimental super-soldier tool, as it can suppress adrenal responses to allow calm and collected decisions while under fire, by United Systems military scientists. To this end, it finds use in some specialized units, though generally to suppress remorse and hesitation to allow a wider recruitment body for more morally dubious operations.

As with many technologies, it later found its way to corporate use, where it could increase efficiency in high-stress situations, and even later – public use as a medical technology for various illnesses, and then even later, recreational use for designer drugs.

In the Fringe, it can be acquired by shady back-alley doctors or in clean environments by companies with reputations to protect with the expected variety of quality in both the organ and the payloads. Corporate payloads are usually clean (if they’re selling in locations with governments, anyway) and are more expensive, while cheaper payloads can be acquired from any number of suspect darknex sources.

One such corporate supplier is Chemical Corp, a Synapse subsidiary.

    Referenced Technologies (Optional): N/A
