    Name: Forget-Me-Not Implant

Description: A small black-grey metal neural implant generally installed in the hippocampus. When programmed memories are attempted to be accessed (either by the implanted subconsciously or by outside means), the thoughts are re-directed to the closest neural cousin. This is often a related memory, but not always.

    Abilities:

    -Avoid thinking about traumatic memories

-Avoid giving up information by not being able to access the information

-Render other unwanted memories inaccessible without getting a lobotomy or severe trauma

    Conditional Abilities (Optional):

-Military-grade variants include significant anti-hacking provisions, and are more willing to fry the user than let the implant fail

-Some variants include triggers to activate (and very rarely, de-activate) specifically to make interrogation difficult

-Some variants include complicated unique de-activation keys held by outside parties (usually a ‘handler’)

-If attempted to be accessed by any number of memory-examining methods or technologies, the barriers may take a physical form or apply noteworthy resistance to topic examination. ‘Forcing’ the issue with memory-write technologies is messy, causes confusion and dissonance, and generally doesn’t get the desired outcome

    Limitations:

-Doesn’t completely remove trauma. Can lead to trauma reactions with unknown causes.

-If removed when active, can cause severe brain damage and memory loss

    Conditional Limitations (Optional):

    -Civilian-grade variants can be hacked

-If attempted to be accessed by any number of memory-examining methods or technologies, the barriers may take a physical form or apply noteworthy resistance to topic examination. ‘Forcing’ the issue with memory-write technologies is messy, causes confusion and dissonance, and generally doesn’t get the desired outcome

How does it work: The implant connects with the user’s hippocampus to modify neural pathways and redirect away from memories and information that it is programmed to ‘protect’ the user from.

Flavor text: Originally designed as a failed PTSD treatment, the FMN implant found its niche in less severe cases and industrial espionage, later expanding to military applications for deniable ops and other activities, and most especially in criminal organizations.

The final reason is what caused them to be widely outlawed in Civspace unless deemed a ‘legitimate medical or therapeutic use’, which also lead to a chain of complex legal scandals and abuses. In the Fringe, these varied laws aren’t a question, as most nations lack the level of control over their people needed to possibly enforce them. Even so, they find their place among pirates and mafiosos as much as spies and soldiers.

Referenced Technologies (Optional): Memory Viewer (Mentioned)

    Attainability: Open

Seems pretty clear cut! Very reasonable bit of espionage tech. Pass.
