She wasn’t the first nor the last to be abandoned by her parents and taken in by an orphanage. She didn’t really care. Much of her early life was generally unnotable. She liked to draw, frequented arcades, enjoyed comics, stayed mostly out of trouble, though she did pick up martial arts at one point. Mostly as a hobby and out of curiosity, at first. Sometime when she got older though, she, as many other young Hylotl, joined the peace protests. And the first few didn’t go too bad. But that, unfortunately, changed when they suddenly also started facing opposition from other young Hylotl, of their generation and even younger. Violent opposition. It was during one of those clashes that one of the aggressors got close. Umeko never really was “at the front” or in those few places they popped up when they did. Mostly by chance. But this one managed to slip in like many other and started beating on the protesters, with a wooden stick. She took a hit hard, yes. It felt like it almost broke her arm. But oddly enough, when he raised it to go for another strike, despite a few hands from the crowd already reaching to grab and stop the agressor, she punched back. Peace protests are supposed to be all about peace, of course. This also meant non-violence, even under the threat of it, lest the whole protest itself be simply pretentious. But Umeko did not think about that, then. Momentary fear, adrenaline, pain and instinct all have a way of making people do things. Along with other factors, it lead to that moment, as she punched out the attacker’s lights out. He wasn’t dead, but unconscious; just some common rabble-rouser, after all. Those that saw it were as shocked as Umeko herself was when it all properly hit her this time. So she very promptly excused herself and ran off back home. While distressed for a day and some, she eventually calmed down, and promptly went to the next peace rally when it was happening. And whether by some cosmic coincidence or premeditated, once again the militarists struck. This time, however, it seemed that one of them remembered her. She ran right away when things were getting heated in general, of course, which did not quite detract the agitated agressor and his two friends, leading to a ‘tussle’ in a much less populated street. That was how the problem began; the process repeating a few times. She became rather locally infamous at that as well. So much so that trouble started finding her even when she wasn’t participating in any political activities anymore. Bad looks, occasional harrassment or even the rare violence, all not a stone toss away. And the oddest thing was that she was learning how to live with it somehow. For a few years her life became a steady cycle of training, drawing and a few dangerous bouts. All the while her enjoyment of violence, or rather, her adversity to it was becoming next to none. Opinion was shifting to fear and disrance from her pacifist friends, along with infamy and even an odd form of respect from the other militarist detractors. And then someone brought a gun. Was some aggressive Hylotl from offworld, that during an argument about to escalate managed to shoot her, almost killing her. It was a shot into the lung, requiring surgery and much rest thereafter. And while it was surprising to see then the support she had gotten, it was still...quite an experience, to say the least. Did well in calming and cooling her right back down. And so when she got better she scrounged up her funds and savings, sold her little apartment and instead bought her very own ship. The smallest that could be, at a rather shady price, but one that managed to move, serve as a home and, most importantly, explore the Fringe. After all, what better place to get away to? Get to know more things, learn new stuff, help and know more people. Yeah... Relationships Parents: None Siblings: None Any enemies (and why): None relevant (yet) Children: None Friends: None relevant (yet) Best friend(s): Nope Love interest (if there is one): Nuh Combat Peaceful or violent: Predominantly attempting to be peaceful. Weapon (if applicable): Fists, spear or anything nearby Style of fighting: Umeko practices one od the much older Hylotlian martial arts which loosely translates to “open palmed mind”. It mostly focuses on hand-to-hand combat and self-defense, in situations where one, both or neither side is armed. Its movements flow well into one another, utilizing speed and strength as well as using nearby objects as makeshift weapons or occasional unconventional tactics. Open-palmed strikes and using jointlocks, throws and helping oneself with using the opponent’s own momentum are the most popular attacks. All in all Umeko is a respectable fighter in close-quarters, be it not the best by a long-shot, struggling against more experienced opponents especially in different styles, though if not facing a professional managing to just about hold her own, usually. But as a wise man once said: “To be captured is a loss, to compromise is half a loss, but to run away is no loss at all”. And thus often when faced with a situation too unfavourable or one where guns are involved, well...Umeko has also gotten really good at running.
