Hi. I'm a big fan of speculative evolution and biology, so I wanted to run an Evogame here. Tried to in the discord, but Threads don't get bumped like forum posts do, which is unfortunate for getting new people. What's an Evogame? (+ Rules) An Evogame is a style of game where a few starter creatures are given, and people make edits to the drawing to represent them changing and gaining traits as the generations go by. Don't directly evolve your own creatures/submissions. It's meant to be a collaborative game. Don't evolve the same line too many times in a row either, try to mix it up a bit. Give a little description when you make a new evo, so that we know what the change is meant to be. Don't make the change huge, or too abrupt when posting. I reserve the right to veto a species if it suddenly does something too bizarre, like randomly developing completely world-changing mechanics in a single generation. Save as a .png, and please try to make Evos that people can work on. If a species is absolutely beautifully drawn, but nobody can add anything to it because of complexity, it's likely to go extinct. Starting creatures: The Quasit is a small, aquatic Ruinling that directs itself using a flagella. It's barely multicellular, and is extremely small. They move around and use the permeable membranes on their tops to absorb organic detritus in the non-Ruinling biosphere that these creatures are infesting. The large eye is typically faced upwards, due to most threats coming from above. The Imp is tiny and aquatic as well. It's a micropredator, that uses its fins to dart around and chase prey. It's capable of sharper turns and rotations, and preys on anything that it can catch- even its Quasit brethren. They stay in the centre of the water column. The Dretch is a bottom-feeder that uses countless villi to move around. They're coated with a calcified shell that makes it harder to prey on them, like barnacles. After consuming enough material, they regurgitate it from their singular orifice, having converted it into tiny larvae that free-swim for a period, before solidifying into an adult form and sticking themselves to surfaces.
Evolutions: These are creatures that evolved in the discord thread. The Quasit evolves countershading, in order to escape the watchful gaze of the Imps, as well as oceanic predators in the ecosystem. A group of extant quasits began to evolve radial symmetry, beginning with their flagella. In order to better predate on Quasits, the biting 'beaks' of an Imp population evolve into a curving, scissor-like shape, allowing them to snip at flagella and attempt to slice them off. Even if they're unable to kill their prey, they're able to gain small morsels to sustain themselves with. The next generation of Dretches, who have evolved in low-current areas, develop specialised spouts to shoot their larvae out of. This helps them to spread out even further, occupying shallows and areas where the currents can't do most of the work. To evade the newly evolved predatory imps, another group of Quasits develops a muscular tail. Their tops also become more blue due to random mutation. The Phylogeny chart so far Feel free to evolve creatures from here and add to the game! Just post and reply to the creature that you're evolving from, and attach the image.
Sample evo, to get it going for the thread: With the advent of the Imps, some Quasit find it much easier to feed from the bottom of the sea and avoid detection. After generations of the radially-symmetrical ones patrolling the floor, they've developed an improved tendril shape to push themselves across the ground. These ones end up directly competing for food with the Dretches.
The permeable membrane of the tailed Quasits become wider and span out further, in order to engulf more detritus at once. This allows them to passively harvest more food while filter-feeding.
