It connects into the user's spine and brain to allow control over what is essentially a weaker version of the ICIF's Qarins. The backpack also serves as an achoring point for the Qarins, meaning they are always projected from the backpack and can't materialise in front of the user without some form of visual clue to point it's origin back to the device they are carrying.
