Name: Heat Rays Description: Heat rays are devices that use core fragment ore and ionize it into a conical projection to form concentrated infrared rays that heat up and begin to burn in a larger surface area; Arachnid heat rays are generally 'steam-punk' in appearance, and can be any size; bigger guns, even things such as mounted airship heat rays, produce a much stronger effect and use larger crystals; some bigger heat rays even have auto reloading mechanisms. The heat ray itself appears as a very faint red or orange coloration and shimmer in the air, the ripples caused by heat refraction evident as the heat ray fires. Note: NEVER LOAD A HEAT RAY WITH FERROSILICATE POWDER. IT WILL EXPLODE YOUR GUN AND PROBABLY YOUR HAND. (Above: A typical Arachnid heat ray gun, complete with a variable power system with a gauge.) Abilities: Creates a conical ray of intense infrared radiation, incinerating things right at the barrel and igniting things at a distance. Relatively cheap ammunition reliant on one power source, core fragment shards. Can be scaled up onto cannons to have a more powerful effect. Can also be constructed to simply fire in a straight, coherent line to increase the intensity at a lesser area of effect. Limitations: Core fragment crystal must be replaced around every 30 minute for devices without an auto reload feature or a larger holding chamber (most smaller guns do not). Damage done decreases the longer the range is, while the area affected increases. How does it work: Arachnid heat rays use relatively simple mechanisms to induce an electric arc at one point of the loaded core fragment shard to ionize the ferrosilicate crystal into intense infrared heat that is concentrated, bouncing in a small chamber of reflecting cylindrical mirror that then projects the ray out into a conical area, the area of effect increasing with range along with the heat given decreasing. The heat ray, in larger devices, can act as an area of effect weapons, and the rays are also useful for heating up liquids, cooking food, and more. As the electric arc continues to charge the crystal and ionize the tip of it, the crystal eventually runs out after approximately a half hour of full use, requiring another core fragment piece to be inserted into the device. The core fragment ore both powers the electric current and produces the heat ray, making them relatively simple devices created by Arachnid Portia inventors. Flavor text: Heat rays were invented by Arachnid Portias after the Arachnid Industrial Revolution, as they began to learn the uses of core fragment ore and use it to their advantage, perfecting the devices until they could be scaled down to the size of a pistol or way up to the size of a death ray igniting anything its facing. Heat rays also became a method of easily cooking food similar to a microwave, and found other unique uses as well, such as in welding as placing metal right at the barrel can melt it.
