Name: Color-conception Enhancement Neural Implant (CENI)

Description: A small green neural implant, colored as such from aegisalt shielding.

    Abilities:

-Allows the conception of additional colors.

    Conditional Abilities:

    - Relatively short disorientation period for small spectral increases (such as only near IR).

    Limitations:

-Disorienting until accustomed to, with disorientation proportional to the increase in light spectra that can be seen.

-Can only be used to perceive light, not other forms of sensing (these still require ‘switching modes’ of eyes, which apply some visualization that takes up sense space)

    Conditional Limitations (Optional):

-Generally requires additional implants, particularly replacing eyes, to actually be able to ‘see’ additional colors.

    How does it work:

Various implants exist which enhance the spectra of light that can be seen. Famous examples include IR implants (popular military hardware that reduces the efficacy of camouflage) and UV implants (which has more niche applications).

Most of these implants work by either stacking the spectra on top of each other (IR might appear as ‘white’ or ‘deep red’ rather than its own color set) or by pallet-shifting (IR appears as red, but all colors are shifted red-wise, resulting in desaturation of purples).

With CENI, these limitations no longer apply. Instead, this brain augment allows perception of new, additional colors. UV and IR, being the most popular, take on distinct unique colors. If someone has very expensive eye augments which can pick up faint radio signals given off by things around them, these too would take on a unique color, as well as x-rays and any others. The variety of colors in these areas are more numerous than the visible range (as they tend to govern more wavelengths), so the variety of new colors in the world around the user is often very disorienting until they are used to it if they opt to take on broad-spectra. Especially disorienting can be learning to identify which colors are what- because language isn’t designed to describe these as well, new colors of grand variety might fall under the umbrella ‘near UV.’

    Flavor text:

For most of the history of optically-expansive implants and optics, it has been generally accepted that to see new spectra, they had to be superimposed onto the visual spectra. However, innovations since 3279 have allowed for new (albeit expensive) way to enhance the visual experience.

The initial discoveries were made and published by academics, preventing any corporation from forming a proper monopoly on the implant. Even so, high cost of manufacturing (with an average implant cost of 30k px between materials, precision manufacturing, and installation) prevent it from becoming more widespread. The general disorientation and lack of real advantage for most applications (where stacking or shifting spectra is perfectly functional for a fraction of the cost) along with the impossibility of a patent have also stood in the way of development of cheaper variations.

Even so, the academic discovery has allowed a number of cybernetics corporations and independent cyberneticists from making and selling their own versions on-demand- anyone who wants it can get it if they can pull together the scratch.

Looks good to me. This is something that barely needs to be apped in my opinion, but I'm not deferring it because it's nice to have documentation on it.
Pending because of one line of questioning: is the implant affected by EMPs? Can it be shielded? If it is disabled by EMPs, is it a permanent or temporary disable?

It comes shielded. It's an implant that doesn't reasonably need to be accessed by any wireless external devices after installation. However, it does nothing if it doesn't have cybernetic eyes attached- so the eyes might be broken or disabled by EMPs.
