    Name:
    Chromorph Dye

    Description:
Chromorph dye is a unique nanomaterial dye that can be safely applied cosmetically to any surface, including metal, wood or even skin or hair. When receiving a command from an external computer the nanomaterial rapidly changes colour.

    Abilities:
    • Chama-chama-chameleon!: Chromorph dye allows for the rapid change of a target objects colour.
    • Endurant: Chromorph dye is durable, and can withstand most environmental conditions including heavy rain, winds and sun.
    • Limited Animation: Chromorph dye can act as a simple screen, displaying some very basic animations. Usually only the shifting of hues and colours.

    Limitations:
    • Sluggish: Chromorph dye is much too slow to act as a suitable substitute for active camouflage, at best being able to shift into darker hues so something can hide in, say, a shadow.
    • EMP intolerant: An EMP blast will cause a rapid breakdown of the material, instantly destroying it.

    How does it work?:
Chromorph dye is applied via a dedicated tool which constructs and applies the material on the spot. The materials nanoscopic structure is similar to that of muscle fibres and the chromatophores of certain animal species found all across the galaxy that allow for rapid colour changing. The pigments present in these chromatophores come in the colours red, green and blue (and occasionally black), organised in a repeated pattern. This is similar to the pixels of many monitors.

Tiny, incredibly simple nano-machines are integrated into the structure. These nanomachines are designed to tug on the chromorph material, flexing the material and stretching some pigment sacs, making their colour more visible or, conversely, relaxing the material, shrinking other sacs.

An external computer, usually in the form of a remote controls the material. When a colour is requested it sends out a signal that organises and informs all the nanomachines what to do. The signal, in addition to communicating to the nanomachines, helps provide the miniscule amount of energy required for the machine to either flex or relax. In between pulses the machine makes use of mechanical locks to keep the material at a desired flex.

Should the material be hit by an EMP the nanomachines will end up rapidly flexing, turning the entire coated object a bright white for a period before the material tears itself apart and the machines are destroyed. Although devastating for the material, the object beneath will be mostly fine.

Pending, one thing I want to clarify first- how complex of a pattern can the dye support? Could you, say, use the dye applied to a flat surface to show a slide show?

As mentioned under the limitations section, they can usually only display the shifting of colours, with any image probably appearing fairly blurry or watered out. It's better for applying broader colours across an area. However if you were to, say, apply this to your hair you could animate it in such a way to where it looked like your hair was made of fire.
    Hope this clarifies things!
