Name: Mindshield Description: An endi-detector and reactive scattering neural implant usually located in the hippocampus. Abilities: -Prevent brainscans, particularly those taken against the will of the implanted Conditional Abilities (Optional): -Generally, the user has some sort of failsafe to disable the device – a long code they have memorized or something similar for the purposes of medical emergency or volitional brainscan -EMP hardened -Sometimes contains additional failsafe to make removal lethal -Also prevents the function of memory viewers Limitations: -Does nothing to protect the user from torture, interrogation, or extended confinement -Can be removed with sufficient time, material, and expertise (though if someone is good enough to remove it, they’re also good enough to tell you that attempting to do so will most likely kill the person in mind) Conditional Limitations (Optional): -If the user is incapacitated, the implant will prevent medical ENDI-scans of the brain that might be necessary for treatment -Some security systems will also trip the reactive scattering, causing false-positives for contraband -No variant exists for androids – other technologies exist to protect androids from hackers -Does nothing to protect from other means of probing the memory, such as psionics or shifter interrogation How does it work: The device is small and powered by neural electricity (or equivalent in the case of glitch or unique alien xenotypes) with a simple detection switch for ENDI-based scanners. When a probe-wave is sent, a scattering signal is produced in response, preventing any meaningful construction of neural networks and, with it, preventing any effective brainscans. Flavor text: “So tell me, exactly. Why don’t we just take a brain scan, kill him, and call it a day?” “Brain implant. We can’t take a scan. And if we try to take it out, his head’ll pop.” “Mother fucker.” Designed and released on the Nexus by one or more anonymous white-hat neural engineers believed to be located on Purgatory, Mindshield is a staple almost as ever-present as eye implants to protect from laser blindness and ear implants to protect from gunshot deafness. Anyone who wishes to protect themselves from anything from identity theft to corporate espionage has a reason to get this implant. With a free design producible for only a few pixels and open-source autodoc instructions, the only thing surprising about Mindshield is that nobody made it sooner. Prior to the white-hat variant, several corporations created similar technologies specifically to combat hostile corporate espionage, which gradually made its way to the government sector – but never quite reached the public. While these variants still exist, Mindshield is an objective upgrade in all forms of design – it’s cheaper, and doesn’t have any tracking software, nor does it come with concerns about a killswitch from the distributor.
